Dear Reader,
For 65 years, Pushkin House has brought together artists, writers, musicians, filmmakers, performers and thinkers who explore and celebrate all aspects of Russian culture. Founded by Russian émigrés and British enthusiasts we are the UK's foremost independent centre of Russian culture.
In 2019 we held three solo exhibitions, each of them accompanied by an explorative and thought-provoking programme of events: ‘Mother Tongue’, the first London solo exhibition by New York-based Russian artist Yevgeniy Fiks exploring historical gay Russian argot. ‘In Paradise’ by Margarita Gluzberg, connected to the fortieth anniversary of the making of Tarkovsky’s ‘Stalker’ and our current show ‘Icebreaker Dreaming’ by Ruth Maclennan exploring the present state of the Arctic in multitude of meanings in the context of the climate emergency.
As London’s oldest independent centre for Russian culture, this summer we presented ‘May My Voice Now’ an exhibition that explored and celebrated 65 years of our history. The show featured materials from the newly revealed archives of Pushkin House alongside reflections and interventions by contemporary artists.
We staged a rich classical music programme, presenting well known and emerging musicians. We welcomed the young and the curious through our doors with our Young Pushkin and Learn + Participate programmes. We awarded our sixth Pushkin House Book Prize to Serhii Plokhy for his book ‘Chernobyl: History of a Tragedy’. We launched our Poetry Residency with Oxford University and announced the beginning of our own Pushkin House Music Festival, which will offer a new London adventure in Russian music throughout 2020 and into 2021.
Pushkin House receives no government funding and we rely solely on donations to deliver our programming.
For as little as £4.00 a month, you can ensure that we continue to deliver a vibrant and inspiring programme. Become a Friend and enjoy a range of benefits.
