Lazar Khidekel, Suprematism and the Russian Avant-Garde
9 July – 27 September 2014
An exhibition discussing the work of the great avant-garde artist, architect, designer and theorist, Lazar Khidekel (1904-1986).
Khidekel worked closely with Marc Chagall, El Lissitzky and Kazimir Malevich in Vitebsk in the years 1918-1922, where he became an important proponent and theorist of the Suprematist movement and a founding member of the UNOVIS Group (The Affirmers of New Art).
The exhibition focused on early works by Lazar Khidekel from the golden age of Russian constructivism in the 1920s. It explored Khidekel's role in developing Malevich's system of Suprematism and his work and life during the early years of the Russian avant-garde. It displayed 20 original drawings and 30 photographs and posters. The artworks, period photographs and posters from the Khidekel Family Archive in New York City are kindly lent by Mark and Dr Regina Khidekel.
