Step Up: a photo-essay by Polina Bykonya
Polina Bykonya grew up in an orphanage before she joined Vverh (Step Up), an orphan opportunity centre, providing top-up education and life lessons to young people who grew up in state institutions. Polina has prepared this photo essay especially for Pushkin House, sharing the world of her beloved charity which is a life-line for 300 young people.
Однажды Рома на студенческой конференции спросил: «А если человек немой, его речь можно перевести?» Рома пришел в «Вверх» 8 лет назад, тогда он плохо говорил и не умел читать. Сейчас Рома говорит просто и кратко, его речь понятна и он умеет читать.
At a student conference, Roma asked, “Can you translate the words of a mute person?” Roma came to Vverh eight years ago, barely able to speak. Today Roma can speak in short sentences and can be understood, and he is also able to read.
Взрослый человек - это про деятельность, это про то, что ты можешь менять мир. Не обязательно менять - в смысле делать его лучше или что-то еще. А в том смысле, что имеешь смелость, например, переплавить металл и выковать меч. Ты не боишься вмешиваться в этот мир, знаешь, что можешь его поменять, и будешь нести за это ответственность. Being an adult is about taking action and changing the world. Not necessarily changing it but making it better somehow. For example, having the courage to express yourself and not being afraid to interact, by making changes in the world it and taking responsibility for them. (A.V.)

The same person. If there was no support here, nothing would come out of it. It comes down to the fact that you can turn away from someone and act with courage, knowing that they’ve got your back. More than this, whatever you do you’re valued, they’re proud of you. These people are everything: a friend, a loved one, a teammate. A single soldier does not make an army. (P.P.)
