Grigory Yavlinsky

Born in Ukraine in 1952, economics expert Grigory Yavlinsky started his career in academia before joining the Legislative Assembly of St Petersburg. In 1990 he was appointed Deputy Prime-Minister of Russia and worked as Gorbachev’s political adviser in 1991.  He founded the liberal Russian United Democratic Party YABLOKO, in 1993, and was elected to the State Duma in the same year. As the leader of YABLOKO Yavlinsky has twice run for President of the Russian Federation.  He has authored a number of books and articles about the Russian economy, and won the Liberal International Prize for Freedom in 2004.
