Pushkin House is delighted to begin a series of Russian film screenings and talks with the mesmerizing "Mirror" by A.Tarkovsky. The event will start off with a discussion with our guest speaker - Tarkovsky's official English translator Kitty Hunter-Blair (Stidworthy), followed with the screening of the film (in English, with subtitles), followed by discussion.

"Mirror" is loosely autobiographical, unconventionally structured, and incorporates poems composed and read by the director's father, Arseny Tarkovsky. 

The film features Margarita Terekhova, Ignat Daniltsev, Alla Demidova, Anatoli Solonitsyn, Tarkovsky's wife Larisa Tarkovskaya and his mother Maria Vishnyakova, with a soundtrack by Eduard Artemyev.

Mirror unfolds as an organic flow of memories recalled by a dying poet.

The film combines contemporary scenes with childhood memories, dreams, and newsreel footage. The cinematography slips unpredictably from color to black-and-white to Sepia then back again to color. The loose flow of visually oneiric images has been compared to stream of consciousness technique in literature.

Kitty Hunter-Blair (Stidworthy) has translated Andrei Tarkovsky’s 'Sculpting in Time', his 'Diaries', and 'Andrei Rublev'. For several years she has been translating selected poems by Arsenii Tarkovsky, to be published by Tate Publishing, with an introduction on the artistic kinship between father and son, and notes on the poems. For many years Kitty Hunter-Blair (Stidworthy) taught Russian at the Slavonic Department of Cambridge University.
