WORDS AND MUSIC: THE GUEST FROM THE PAST: ANNA AKHMATOVA AND BORIS ANREP

To coincide with the Akhmatova. Anrep. Berlin. Exhibition currently at Pushkin House, David Brummell gives a talk on the connection between Anna Akhmatova and Boris Anrep, “the Guest from the Past”.

The evening will focus on Akhmatova’s relationship with Anrep and on Anrep’s work as an artist in his own right.  The role of Anrep in Akhmatova’s poetry and how he was a source of her creativity will be explained.

The talk will be interspersed with the reading of the poems by Akhmatova which were inspired by Anrep. We also include a piano piece by Alexander Scriabin and a song by Vertinsky.  

The poems will be read in Russian by Alla Gelich and the English translations will be read by Lucy Daniels  (The text of the English translations will also be available.)

The musical accompaniment will be provided by the pianist Nadia Giliova, and three of Akhmatova’s poems which have been set to music will be sung by Lila Moshtael.

At the end of the evening Lila Moshtael will sing Vertinsky’s song “My Star”.
