In video extracts of the 1982 South Bank Show of the same title, one of Russia's greatest and most controversial theatre directors is seen putting on his own adaptation of Dostoevsky's novel at the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith.  The drama features very talented actors such as Bill Patterson, Gary Waldhorn, and Michael Pennington as Raskolnikov.  Throughout the production period in London, Yury Petrovich was battling with Soviet embassy officials eager to curtail his stay in the West.

Tony Cash is an international award-winning TV arts documentary programme-maker as well as the author of books and essays on Russian and Soviet themes.  His most recent publication, as co-author, is THE CODER SPECIAL ARCHIVE (Hodgson Press 2012), the story of men learning Russian in the Royal Navy during national service in the 1950s, and using the language in a variety of Cold War contexts.
