ANASTASIA STONE: CODING CLUB AT PUSHKIN HOUSE

We are very excited to announce that the London School of Mathematics and Programming will now be running a Coding Club at Pushkin House on Saturdays. To start with there will be a 5-week-course to introduce children to Scratch programming, commencing on 18 April. We will run two small groups with just 6 children in each. Our morning course from 10:30a.m. to midday is for 9 to 11 year-olds and 12 to 14 year olds can attend from 12:15p.m. to 1:45p.m.

Scratch is a programming language and an online community where children can programme and share interactive media such as stories, games and animation with people from all over the world. As children create with Scratch, they learn to think creatively, work collaboratively, and reason systematically. Scratch is designed and maintained by the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and provided free of charge.

What do young people learn as they create interactive stories, animations, games, music and art with Scratch?

For one thing, they learn mathematical and computational ideas that are built into the Scratch experience. Significantly, students learn these concepts in a meaningful and motivating context. As students work on Scratch projects, they also learn about the process of design. This project-design process combines many of the 21st century learning skills that will be critical to success in the future: thinking creatively, communicating clearly, analysing systematically, collaborating effectively, designing iteratively and learning continuously. Creating projects in Scratch also helps students to develop a deeper level of fluency with digital technology.

Anastasia Stone has a first-class-degree from the faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics of Saint-Petersburg State University and her background is in investment banking and corporate communications. Now teaching in London, one of her pupils’ parents recently commented, “Anastasia brings the best of the famous Russian school to teaching maths and programming and her lessons are always fun”.

The cost of the 5-week-course is £225 and places are very limited.
