This concert celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Moscow Conservatory. Founded by Nikolai Rubinstein in 1866, the conservatory was an immediate success. Most of Russia’s great composers and performers had an affiliation with the Conservatory at some stage of their lives, including Shostakovich, Taneyev, Scriabin, Neuhaus, Richter, Oistrakh and Rostropovich. This concert focuses on two great alumni of the Conservatory: Pyotr Tchaikovsky, a professor there from 1866-1878, and Sergey Rachmaninov, a Gold Medal graduate of 1892. The programme will culminate in a performance of Tchaikovsky’s trio which is dedicated to Nikolai Rubinstein.
Programme:
Rachmaninov: Two Pieces for violin and piano, Op. 6
Rachmaninov: Sonata for cello and piano, Op. 19
Tchaikovsky: Trio for violin, cello and piano, Op. 50 ‘A la memoire d’un grand artiste’
