The art historian Igor Golomstock, who died last July, was born on 11 January 1929, in the old Russian city of Tver. Please join us to celebrate Igor's life and work on what would have been his 89th birthday.
Igor is best known for his Totalitarian Art (1990), the first serious study of the similarities between the official art of Stalinist Russia and that of Nazi Germany. His other publications include: the first Soviet book on Picasso, co-written with Andrey Sinyavsky (1960); a large-format album of the delicate, surreal pencil drawings composed in the Gulag by Boris Sveshnikov; books on Bosch, Cezanne and English art; and a memoir, to be published in 2018 by I.B.Tauris, provisionally titled "A Ransomed Dissident: Memoirs of a Soviet Art Historian".
An extract from this memoir can be read here.
After emigrating to the UK in 1972 and teaching in various universities, Igor spent the rest of his professional life making radio programmes, mostly cultural features, for the BBC Russian Service.
This will be an informal evening, a chance for Igor’s friends, colleagues and admirers to talk briefly about their meetings with Igor over the years - a chance for all of us to talk about what Igor gave to us and the loss we now feel.
This event is FREE, RSVP to office@pushkinhouse.org.uk to attend.
