Join us for a poetry evening devoted to the Russian and Soviet poet Marina Tsvetaeva whose works (and works of the authors she admired) will be read by an acclaimed actress of The Moscow New Drama Theatre Natalia Maeva. The talk with be conducted in Russian and English with the help of a poet, translator and playwright Sasha Dugdale.
Russian poet Marina Tsvetaeva was born in Moscow. Her father was a professor and founder of the Museum of Fine Arts, and her mother, who died of tuberculosis when Marina was 14, was a concert pianist. At the age of 18 Tsvetaeva published her first collection of poems, Evening Album. During her lifetime she wrote poems, verse plays, and prose pieces; she is considered one of the most renowned poets of 20th-century Russia.

Biographies
Natalia Maeva graduated from The Vakhtangov Theatre Academy. Among her teachers, was the famous romantic actress Cecilia Mansurova. Maeva’s first performances as an actress were at the Moscow Comedy Theatre, where she played many roles from the Russian and international repertoire.For nearly 25 years, Natalia has been working at the New Drama Theatre in Moscow. Among her roles were Tina in “The Aspern Papers” by Henry James, Cécile de Volanges in “The Dangerous Liaisons” by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos , Mother in “The Moscow Stories of Love and Marriage” (based on Alexander Ostrovsky’s plays “Tushino” and “Not of the Same Ilk!”), to name but a few. The latter performance was shown at the Sixth Theatre Festival in Marcel, France.
Sasha Dugdale is a Writer-in-residence at St John's Cambridge, poet, translator and playwright. She has published four collections of poetry with Carcanet, Notebook, The Estate, Red House, and Joy, which won the 2017 Poetry Book Society Winter Choice Award and the title poem from which won the 2016 Forward Prize for Best Single Poem. In 2017 Sasha was awarded a Cholmondeley Prize and from 2012 to 2017 she was editor of Modern Poetry in Translation. She is co-director of the Winchester Poetry Festival.
