Human Rights and Art in Russia today - social engagement in the post Soviet world through the eyes of artist Victoria Lomasko.
A talk by leading Russian artist specialising in graphic reportage, Victoria Lomasko, about social initiatives that she has documented in her work, including campaigners protecting parks and fighting mass demolitions in Moscow, and long distance lorry drivers protesting their rights. She will also talk about art therapy initiatives in prisons and mental hospitals that she has observed and taken part in. She will put this in the context of other artists' actions that are bringing attention to important social issues that are being ignored by the authorities in Russia and the post Soviet world, and discuss what she considers to be the most effective initiatives.
Lomasko had a show at Pushkin House in March - May of this year, 'On the Eve'. She won the Pushkin House Best Book in Translation 2018 award for her book 'Other Russias' (with translator Thomas Campbell) . Lomasko is one of the most important recorders of life in Russia today, partly because she gives voice to so many different groups.
This event is part of Bloomsbury Festival 2018.
