Zoom Event: Hear Them Roar with Harriet Phillips

Harriet Phillips speaks via Zoom about platforming feminist voices in Putin's Russia

Given that current circumstances prevent us meeting in person for events, for the first time ever Pushkin House presents an online-only event. We're delighted to be able to offer a reprise of Harriet Phillips's talk from February

Feminist activism in Russia is flourishing, both online and on the streets. These women are battling the oppressive narrative of “traditional family values” through art, action and song. From post-gender political hip hop to body-positive cartoons, feminist fairy tales to lesbian sex-ed social media, the Russian feminists of today are making their voices heard.

Join Harriet Phillips as she explores compelling stories from the past year of Russian feminist activism, such as the creation of the first ever all-female/non-binary safe space in Russia (which triggered a nationwide torrent of hatred) and pro-choice anti-militaristic actions involving copious amounts of soy meat.

Harriet Phillips is in her final year at Cambridge University, specialising in Russian. She hopes to pursue a master's in Conference Interpreting, but is yet to settle on a language combination: an avid linguist, she has studied French, Spanish, German, Italian, Modern Greek, Polish and Ukrainian to date. She spent her Year Abroad studying at St Petersburg State University, and devoted much of her free time to collaboration with the feminist project Eve's Ribs.

In summer 2019, she was detained and fined in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, for giving a talk on feminism - little chance of her being silenced now!
