Explore the rich world of Russian art in the nineteenth century from epic academic canvases to radical breakaway works, and those who made and collected them. Running in partnership with City Lit.
This overview of Russian art in the nineteenth century covers the main artistic movements and the various influences on their development including: academic art, the impact of artists’ travel in Europe, Critical Realism, The Wanderers, commissioning and collecting practices of patrons like Sergei Shchukin, Pavel Tretyakov, and Savva Mamontov, as well as key artists like Ilya Repin, Valentin Serov, Viktor Vasnetsov, Ivan Kramskoi, Nikolai Ge and others.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is suitable for all levels.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught online with slide presentations and a group discussion.
