Movement workshop: For whoever needs it

  • 5a Bloomsbury Square London WC1A 2TA United Kingdom (map)

Through shared movement practice, this workshop explores the connections queerness can enable.

It takes the form of a facilitated exploration, between all participants, of identity and movement. We will ask: what is (your) queerness? how do you move (queerly)? and permutations of these questions as they leak into auto-choreographic potential.

‘Queerness is for whoever needs it’ – said a friend of a friend.

ILLYR will lead this movement workshop with musical accompaniment provided by Jacob Samuel. They will also screen a presentation of their most recent work in progress.

BIOGRAPHY

This year has seen the first major steps for the ILLYR & SAMUEL collaboration, composing music, directing videos and choreographing performers in their first project ‘never let us’ which was funded by ACE 2021 with Support from Hackney Showroom.

Tylor is a black, queer singer, record producer, director and choreographer working under the pseudonym ILLYR. He was featured in the Dazed 100 list, a global celebration of next-gen talent to watch. Jacob Samuel is a working-class artist and former Somerset House resident. Their collaboration combines ILLYRs choreographic work with Jacob’s visual work to meet in their shared practice as musicians.

The event is part of the public programme around our current exhibition Desire International (until 26th of February).
