Prophetic Poems by Russian Poets

In English, with readings of poems in English and Russian.

The Pushkin Club continues the celebration of its 65th Anniversary with an Evening dedicated to the prophetic visions of the greatest Russian poets. Poems by poets of the Golden Age, the Silver Age and the latter part of the 20th Century will be read in Russian and in English translation.

These poems contain amazing prophecies about the future of Russia and the poets' own fate, an unbending faith in the long posthumous life of their poetic works, visions of an ideal world and even predictions of crucial future events in their own lives and the lives of their friends. The Evening is a shortened version of the Pushkin Club event which was held on 1st February 1990 with the same title, and is dedicated to the memory of two of its late members – its former Co-Chair, Richard McKane, and Helen Szamuely – who translated several of the poems that will be read.

A wide range of poets will be represented, from Pushkin to Brodsky, and the Evening will include poems by Lermontov, Blok, Mandelstam, Akhmatova, Pasternak and many others.

The Evening will be introduced by David Brummell

The poems will be read in Russian by Alla Gelich and Lev Levermore and in English translation by Lucy Daniels (a former Co-Chairman of the Pushkin Club), Antony Wood and David Brummell.

This is a Pushkin Club event and all are welcome.
