Join us for the next meeting of our reading group. We chose Lucky Breaks by Yevgenia Belorusets (available in our bookshop here). Lucky Breaks tells of women affected by the war in the east of Ukraine, ongoing since 2014. The meeting will be hosted by our bookshop co-curator Sasha Padziarei.
Belorusets examines conflict through a kaleidoscope of women’s voices and experiences, looking at the trauma of war through everyday life. These stories, ranging from surreal, witty and dark (and often all three at once), tell of a community’s attempts to survive in a place ripped apart by war. Now that Russian military aggression in the east of Ukraine has intensified, and spread to the rest of the country, these stories could not be more timely or devastating.
“Both unsettling and illuminating, altogether it seems no less than excellent.” John Domini, The Washington Post.
2021 saw the opening of Pushkin House’s very own physical bookshop in addition to our online store. While it is still being honed and developed, we are keen to highlight literature that inspires, encourages, moves and validates our readers. We also want to amplify the voices, writers and readers that historically didn’t get and, perhaps, still don’t get the visibility, power and appreciation they deserve. Most of all, we want to create a physical (and an online) place for connection where people can come and share their views.
