Russia and Champagne

Russia has been known for its love of champagne since production began in earnest in the 18th Century. When King William I of Prussia invited Alexander II to a dinner at Café Anglais in Paris in June 1867, which went down in history as the Three Emperors Dinner, he ordered Champagne Louis Roederer to be served in a special lead glass bottle and put it in front of the Tsar so that he could admire the beautiful colour and the stream of bubbles in it. A few years later Roederer Champagne became the champagne of the Tsar’s court and in 1876 Cristal was born.

All this and more will be discussed at the Pushkin House Wine Club on Thursday 13th February, at 19.00-21.00. The tasting will be exclusively devoted to champagne and there will be a maximum of 20 places available so book early to avoid disappointment.
