To publish is to make something public, to convey a message or an experience. But how do we express our stories in the most eloquent and potent way?
In this workshop led by artist duo Morley House, you will acquire a practical overview of the independent bookmaking process and its steps: the choice of material, content sequencing, binding and printing methods, and distribution channels.
Participants will learn:
what are independent publications (zines, pamphlets, chapbooks, artists’ books, etc) and how to choose the right type for your project;
why form and material cannot be separated from artists' books;
what steps you can take to create and distribute your own publication.
This is a practical workshop: we will engage in creating our own artists' books and learn how to make this process joyful and sustainable!
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Morley House is Dinara Asadulina and Christos Kakouros, an artist duo working at the crossroads of visual art and literature. They make artists' books and see them as vessels, depositories for narratives, comprised of textual and physical elements.
They both grew up at the borders – of cultures, countries, languages. A fascination with liminal states and spaces translates into their central themes: trauma and healing, violence and communication, unity and isolation.
In keeping with their backgrounds in linguistics and architecture, they see their creative process as world-building. Through the medium of language, its rigid grammar and syntax, Dinara explores realms of the human unconscious, while Christos moves in the opposite direction: from charcoal lines and watercolour shapes on paper to structured and sculptured narrative.
A book is their meeting point.
