at pushkin house

We run a vibrant cultural programme. Every week Pushkin House hosts a range of events, including panel discussions with distinguished authors and thinkers, film screenings, food related evenings, alongside our regular exhibition openings. Volunteers help to staff these events, contributing to the smooth running of our much-loved venue in Bloomsbury by welcoming and assisting visitors to the House and gaining front of house experience.

As the oldest independent Russian cultural centre in the UK, our archive is a big part of our history. Pushkin House was founded in 1954 by a group of Russian émigrés, led by Maria Mikhailovna Kullmann (Zernova). Their aim was to create a welcoming meeting-place with freedom of speech as a core principle. Volunteers also help organise decades of correspondences and ready material for its contemporary use.

Who can volunteer at Pushkin House?

Anyone with an interest in the arts, culture and in working with a diverse group of people can be a Pushkin House volunteer. You decide how much time you can give – some of our volunteers help us for a limited period, while others have been with us for years.

Do I need to be or speak Russian to volunteer at Pushkin House?

Not at all. Everyone from everywhere is welcome to volunteer at Pushkin House, as long as you are reliable and can work independently and flexibly.

Will volunteering get me a job at Pushkin House?

Volunteering at Pushkin House does not guarantee you a job. You do, however, get the chance to meet interesting people and really familiarise yourself with our venue and programming (which comes in handy when a vacancy does become available). We offer our volunteers networking session at the end of each season, as well as regular bulletins with unique opportunities and invitations.

What else can Pushkin House offer me?

Volunteering with us is ideal for anyone at the start of their careers, looking for experience in an arts institution or from within a professional events environment.
