The Women Of Two Perestroikas, A Talk About The Psychology Of Adaptation

The shock to the system when starting out in a foreign environment is an identity crisis many can identify with, but what does it mean in real psychological terms? An accessible talk based on analysis and real-life examples, with psychologist Tatiana Vincent.

Whilst encompassing the psychology of immigration as an entire subject, the evening's discussion will focus on the so-called 'fifth wave' of Russian emigration, specifically, on the middle-aged female migrants who came to Britain in the 1990s.

Making the extraordinary jump from the sinking ship of the Soviet Union to the bright if not brash lights of Blairite Britain was no mean feat, and the psychological peculiarities of this group of immigrants provided ample material for Tatiana Vincent's doctoral thesis. The findings of her studies, according to Vincent, are unexpected; going against the grain of mainstream research in the field.
