Recalling the immediate aftermath of the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Professor Hosking notes that trust between Russia and the West seemed high. However, the very changes brought about by that dissolution created new problems, which proved ultimately to be obstacles on the road to a trusting relationship with the West. Professor Hosking will examine Russia's economic condition and unstable internal politics, the relationship with NATO and the 'Colour Revolutions'. The question is, can Russia and the West work together for the furthering of their common interests?

Professor Geoffrey Hosking has had a long and distinguished career as a historian of Russia and Russian culture. He was formerly Leverhulme Research Professor of Russian History at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies at University College, London. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2015 New Year Honours for services to higher education and to students.
