For three days in October 2021 Pushkin House is showcasing the best of recent Russian experimental cinema and artists' moving image, selected by the Moscow International Experimental Film Festival and initially presented during one of its iterations since 2016. Each evening the curator of the festival Dmitry Frolov will present the programme, followed by a short conversation between him and a curator from Pushkin House.

The event takes place on three consecutive evenings - Wednesday 20 October, Thursday 21 October and Friday 22 October. Each programme starts at 7pm and lasts for up to 2 hours.

DAY 3: ARCHAEOLOGY OF RUSSIAN DEATH

Tinnitus (Latin tinnītus — a jingling, ringing) is the perception of sound when no external source of sound is present. While often described as a ringing, it may also sound like a clicking, hiss or roaring. The mechanism that causes this symptom is not fully understood yet, but it affects mainly the elderly, therefore, some people consider it a sign of impending death. This experimental documentary is dedicated to music as an instrument for death exploration. The trigger for the storyline was a discussion between composer Evgeny Voronovsky and music journalist Dmitry Vasiliev. They talked about 90's and 00's Russian noise and industrial musicians who had worked with the theme of death on a deep level. Unfortunately, many of them are dead now due to different reasons, such as suicide, drugs and even mystical circumstances. These sound artists have been swallowed by the dangerous field of their studies. As real death emerges from the conversation about it, the film starts to transform, growing in characters, stories and contexts.
